Chapter Five

Days dissolved into weeks while Penny all but sleepwalked through her routine, the monotony broken by an occasional night out with friends. She’d lost her healthy appetite and the escape of restful sleep. Heart-pounding nightmares awakened her at odd times and kept her anxious for hours afterward.

She attended classes groggy and dull, and she embarrassed herself by nodding off during lectures. At mealtimes, she picked at her food. Her hair had begun to lose its shine and her skin turned dull as she lost weight. Her employer at Bottles ’n’ Kegs had started watching her with a suspicious eye.

Nightly pleas to Gunnar in Alfheim remained unanswered. She’d begun to wonder if her affair with the Light Elf had been a figment of her imagination. Maybe she’d been working too hard and had been more affected by her breakup with Miguel than she’d cared to admit. Perhaps the stress had finally pushed her over the edge and she’d hallucinated. Maybe the time had come to see a doctor.

The nightmares she’d been having indicated something was wrong, but she dared not confide in her friends. As open and amazing as they were, they’d be convinced she needed hospitalization if she claimed she’d had sex with a celestial from the west beyond the seas. Didn’t some of the most serious mental illnesses strike in a person’s twenties?

And who could blame them for thinking she’d lost her mind? Even she had begun to doubt Gunnar’s existence, despite the cowrie shell he’d given her. She touched the memento on the chain around her neck. Her friends would claim she’d found the shell, or bought it from a shop. To anyone else, the cowrie wouldn’t be proof of anything but her pathetic need to prove an impossible point.

Her biggest worry was that she had invented Gunnar due to her history of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Maybe she’d been so desperate for genuine affection she’d imagined her night with him. That prospect scared her so badly she decided the time had come to fight her lethargy and take action. The decision prompted her to skip the rest of her classes that day and head to one of her favorite—and most reliable—places in the world for answers: the library.

Instead of draining her energy reserves, the rows of books and the hushed atmosphere filled with quiet excitement stimulated her mind and revived her spirit better than shots of caffeine. She pulled volumes from the shelves on religion, mythology, and ancient rituals, carried them to a corner table, and got lost in the pages.

Hours passed like minutes until her stomach rumbled, the sound loud enough to attract disapproving glances from the students studying close by. She checked the time on her phone and discovered the day would soon fade to twilight.

When her stomach churned again, and a young woman opposite her rummaged through her purse and shoved a candy bar across the table, the solution she’d been searching for came straight into her hands.

“Of course!” She muttered. “Appeasement.”

The other
